how do you go about making and installing a corner shelf ?
i want to install a few shelves in my pool room . . .but my wife asked me not to call out anybody because she says we'll only be waiting to long . .so she asked me to make it (although i have no carpentering background) and i don't know how to make it or how to even start making it or EVEN how to mount it to the wall ?????? please help me because my wife is driving me mad !!!!!
How elaborate do you want to get? You can get basic shelving material from a lumber yard or home center. Get some clear pine 1x4 as well. Locate the studs on the side walls and cut some 1x4 blocks long enough to hit 2 studs. Cut the ends on a 22-1/2 or so degree bevel to avoid a sharp corner and make the block look more finished. Prime and paint them.
Next, you will need to cut your shelving. Measure the width. If it's 11-1/2", measure over from the edge on the back side 11-1/2" and make a mark. Make a mark at 23" over on the front side. Use a straightedge, such as a framing square, to draw lines to connect the front corners to the mark on the back side. Cut along these lines to make your shelf. Use this shelf as a pattern to make as many as you need.
Once the paint dries on the blocks, install them with 8d finish nails. Be sure they are level. If you are nailing within 1-1/2" or so of the end of the board, drill a small hole first to prevent splitting. Be sure they are level. Use a nail set to sink them below the surface of the board, fill with wood filler, and touch up the paint. Set the shelf on top and install with 4d finish nails. Repeat for the rest of the shelves.
