Can flat back four defense be played with marks?
i'm a high school sophomore goalkeeper and our coach is making us try a new defense. he wants us to play flat back four but the way he's teaching it is very wrong to me. he has my defense too far apart and the middle is too open. but he says flat back four is like a zone defense in basketball. you have no mark. one of our more experienced goalkeepers says you still have a mark but it's zonal at the same time... so it flat back four played with our without marks?
a flat back 4 plays with zonal marking, not man marking. but usually because of the opposition's formation, it means there will be 1 striker up against each of the 2 central defenders.
the 4 defenders have to try and keep a steady line and move up the pitch and back together to make use of the offside rule, usually one of the centre backs takes responsibility for this and shouts to the rest to move up or move back.
the full backs (outside defenders) should be watching for opposition wide midfielders making runs down the wing and try to stop them, while the central defenders guard the middle. if a striker makes a run through the defender's zone (while still onside) the defender then has to run with the opponent and try to force him wide or backwards where it becomes a team-mate's job to defend against him.
hope this helps! it's easily understood by saying the defenders don't have to keep an eye on a certain player to mark them, they just have to work together to keep a straight line. if the gap is big between the 2 central defenders, the goalkeeper can shout to tell them as often they have the best view of play. it's all about communication between everyone.
