Embellishment Collection
Need help understanding these books?
My mom bought me this collection of classic books. It's not the cheap kind or anything, they're like the kind of books with the gold embellishments on them, you know? Well yeah. I've been trying to read them but I'm having a hard time understanding them since they were written a while back.
The books are: The War of the Worlds, Sense and Sensibility, The Call of the Wild & White Fang (in one book), A Tale of Two Cities, Anna Karenina, The Wind in the Willows, The Jungle Book, and A Christmas Carol, The Chimes & The Cricket on the Hearth (one book.)
I was hoping someone could give a brief summary on any of the books that I listed that they'd read. And maybe some tips on how to better understand them.
Since all of those are classics, you should be able to find each readily on the web. I would try Wikipedia for a nice summary, as well as some points to watch for.
Don't feel bad; I'm a college student majoring in Literature, and I have trouble with some of these books as well! I can recommend three things that might help:
1: ALWAYS keep a dictionary next to you when reading!!! Look up every word you don't know. You'll be surprised how often it means something much different than you thought it might. I use a little electronic dictionary, but any will work.
2: By the Spark Notes. The book store will have them for each book you listed, for just a few dollars, or you can find them for free online (www.sparknotes.com I believe). These give you a summary for each chapter, explain a few points here and there that might be confusing, and give you a bit more background.
3: If you really get into a book, or need more help, try buying another copy of it, one that's called a "critical edition." These have footnotes on most pages, giving more detailed explanations of some parts. I use these for college, but they might be a bit too involved for what you want. You can also try an "abridged edition,"which is the same story, but written in terms that are easier to understand.
