Cutting Pad
i would like advice on growing a cactus pad....was given 8 pads of a cactus plant...not sure how to start?
how do you start a cactus from a cutting...i have 8 cactus pads to work with....i think they call this cactus teddy bear ears....the plant has large oval shape pads with thorns on it....would like to start a plant....appreciate any help with this.
Cactus requires good drainage soil. Start these in large pots so you can move them from shade to sunny areas. Cactus does not require organics as many other potted plants. Cactus can grow in sand or clay soils with a little mulch mixed in. Start these in strong light, but little direct sun.
Bury the ears half way in the soil. Keep out of direct sun for several months. Water 3 times a week. Cactus requires perfect drainage. Move to warmer areas as soon as you see budding. Cactus can burn so on very hot days protect them from the intense sun. After growth begins you may water less often. Cactus does well in direct sun during the fall, winter, and spring.
Plants mature differently depending on the conditions and cactus are no exception. Cactus naturally tolerates drought and heat very well once the roots are developed.
These plants will stay compact and small when conditions are difficult. If you want them to grow more then water slightly more. Plants in need of water will shrivel a bit. Plant which are over watered will expand and appear fat.
Happy cactus plants will bloom in spring and fall. Flat leaf cactus has decorative flowers and fruit.
Once the plants are mature and growing well you may find locations to put them in the ground. Be sure to place them in raised beds for drainage. No need to over mulch.
